North Fork · Greenport

Greenport still has wells. The hedge still has ticks.

North Fork kitchens still drink private wells more often than a Nassau block. Ticks live in the same grass. Mail a kit from the tap. Treat the clothes. Two Saturdays.

North Fork, not a Nassau district cartoon

Greenport sits in Southold Town at the end of the North Fork. Lots still run a well and a septic on the same sand. Suffolk's plan still talks about tens of thousands of private wells. The North Fork is in that world more than a Hempstead water-district block. Mattituck, two hamlets west, had 20 of 38 private wells over the PFAS limit in one round — some about 60 times over. That is a reason to test a North Fork kitchen. It is not a score you paste onto every Greenport street without bottles. Measure this tap.

If a water-district bill never arrives, fill bottles at the cold tap you drink. Do not wash them with soap. Do not fill from a hose. Pack the same day if you can. Suffolk's $100 test is 631-852-5810. It is a real lab. It looks at bacteria, nitrates, and metals. It does not look for PFAS. It does not look for 1,4-dioxane. This site is not that office. A $12 strip will not find those chemicals either. The wider county map is the well guide. Southold Town as a whole is Southold. Mattituck keeps its own 20-of-38 note. Greenport is the village at the fork: wells plus the ferry crowd walking the same hedge.

If the report comes back high for PFAS, NSF 53 or P473 or reverse osmosis. If 1,4-dioxane is high, reverse osmosis — not a pitcher. Calverton's plume is toward the Peconic from an old Navy/Grumman site. Those site figures are why a well kit matters if you are on a well near there. They are not Greenport's tap. Do not copy 14.9 ppb or 7,580 ppt onto Main Street.

The hedge is a clothes job

Ticks live in grass and edge habitat on the North Fork the same way they do in East Hampton. Permethrin on pants and socks is the ticks page. Do not hang Lyme on the well report. Do not hang a well kit on a tick bite. Treat clothes before you walk the brush. Mail bottles on their own morning. Guests off the ferry need treated clothes too. A yard spray does not ride the cuff onto the next lot.

About three-quarters of Suffolk homes still sit on a septic tank or cesspool. The well and the tank often share one Greenport lot. That sand story is the aquifer page. It is not a shopping list. Publisher mail: 65 Cedar Street, Kings Park. Do not mail bottles there.

Common questions

Is Greenport the same page as Mattituck?

No. Mattituck keeps the 20-of-38 well note. Greenport is the village at the fork: wells plus ferry foot traffic in the same hedge.

Do I splice the kit and permethrin?

No. Two hops. Kit for the tap. Permethrin for clothes.

Does the county $100 test cover PFAS here?

No. Call 631-852-5810 for that cheaper panel. A mail-in kit is the one that looks for PFAS and 1,4-dioxane.

Is this a Calverton page?

No. Calverton is a named plume. Test this Greenport kitchen if it is a well.

Where do bottles go?

Back to the lab that shipped them. Not to 65 Cedar Street.
