Suffolk · Oakdale
Oakdale NY voted yes on sewers. The tank is still the Suffolk rule.
Oakdale passed about 88 percent in December 2025 when grants paid for construction. Great River voted no in 2019. Those are two hamlet votes. They do not sewer the county. If this kitchen still drinks a well, mail a lab kit.

What did Oakdale actually vote in December 2025?
Oakdale is a hamlet in the Town of Islip, Suffolk. In December 2025 the hamlet passed a sewer vote at about 88 percent when grants paid for construction. That line is the meter on this URL. It is a named referendum with a named funding condition. It is not a claim that every Oakdale ranch already has a new lateral in the ground, and it is not a claim that Suffolk flipped from tanks to sewers.
Suffolk is still about 26 percent sewered. About 74 percent of homes are not. The county still talks about 360,000 on-site systems — septic tanks and cesspools — sitting on the same sand the kitchen later drinks. Nassau is about 85 percent sewered. Oakdale did not rewrite that county split by voting yes. A grant that pays for construction is why the vote passed. A grant is not the same as a finished hookup on every lot the week the ballots were counted.
The sand under Nassau and Suffolk is a sole-source aquifer, designated in 1978. There is no backup drinking water. Nitrate in the Magothy aquifer rose more than 80 percent from 1987 to 2013. That is leftover plumbing on sand — tanks and cesspools — not a forever-chemical meter. A nitrate strip can be a later job. It is not this kit. The useful drinking-water step at an Oakdale well is still bottles from the cold tap, because the well and the tank often sit on the same lot and nobody is treating that water on the way in.
This page is the hamlet vote. The Town of Islip page is mixed wells on boom-care ranches. Do not treat those as one URL. Do not treat a South Shore yes vote as a Nassau sewer cartoon. Do not treat it as a freeze-town housing story. Brookhaven and Hempstead Town took the post-2020 people. Oyster Bay, Glen Cove, and Long Beach sat below 2020. That meter lives on housing and leave. Oakdale's fact is the tank.
Why is Great River a different vote?
Great River is also in the Town of Islip. It voted no in 2019. That is six years earlier, a different hamlet, and the opposite result. Do not splice the two into one “Islip sewered” sentence. A yes in Oakdale when grants paid does not sewer Great River. A no in Great River does not cancel Oakdale's later yes. Two hamlet calendars. Two outcomes.
Until later connections actually land, Suffolk is still about 74 percent unsewered. A yes vote on Connetquot Avenue does not sewer Brentwood. A no vote on the next creek does not rewrite the well in the next yard. The aquifer does not wait on the referendum calendar. If you live in Great River, open the Great River page instead of stealing Oakdale's 88 percent. If you live in Oakdale, it is the warning not to assume the tank is already gone.
Unsewered is not the same as a private well. Plenty of lots pay a water-district bill and still send bathroom water into a tank. Plenty of lots run a well and a tank on the same sand. Those are two setups. The vote is about the tank. The kit is about the glass. Keep them in that order. The Town of Islip walkthrough of mixed streets is the Islip page. This URL stays on the named votes.
Does a sewer vote replace a well kit?
No. A sewer is wastewater leaving the lot. A well kit is drinking water at the kitchen tap. PFAS and 1,4-dioxane are not on the sewer ballot. New York limits two common PFAS — PFOA and PFOS — at 10 parts per trillion in drinking water. You will not taste that. You will not smell it. A clear glass after a yes vote does not mean the well is clear of it.
Suffolk still sells a $100 private-well test. Call 631-852-5810 if you want that product. It is a real lab. It is cheap. It looks at bacteria, nitrates, and the metals people have asked the county about for years. It does not look for PFAS. It does not look for 1,4-dioxane. This site is not that office. Keep their test if you want their check. Mail a kit if this Oakdale kitchen still drinks a well and you want the chemicals New York now limits at the tap.
From 2016 through 2022, Suffolk sampled private wells. About 47 percent of those wells showed some PFAS. Two hundred two of them were over drinking-water standards. That is the wells they sampled. It is not a score for Oakdale, and it is not a census of the county plan figure of about 45,000 private wells. Nassau has on the order of a few hundred. This hamlet is Suffolk. Your kitchen still needs its own bottles if it is a well.
A $12 hardware-store strip is even narrower. It is built for chlorine, hardness, and a few metals you match to a color chart. It will not find PFAS. It will not find 1,4-dioxane. A water softener treats hardness. It does not close this gap. A fridge pitcher that only says it filters water is usually taste. 1,4-dioxane needs reverse osmosis. A pitcher is a refund for that chemical.
If this Oakdale kitchen still drinks a well
Walk the backyard. A low round cap in the grass is the usual sign. A pump and a pressure tank in the basement, or in a small well house, are the other tell. If a water-district bill never shows up, treat the kitchen as a well until a lab says otherwise. Mixed streets exist inside the Town of Islip. A neighbor's hydrant is not your pipe. A sewer vote on your block is not a water-district bill.
Order the kit. Use the cold tap you actually drink from. Fill the bottles the way the slip says. Do not wash them with soap. Do not sample the hot side. Do not fill from a garden hose or an outdoor faucet you never use for coffee. Pack them the same day if you can. One kit covers the house. Do not send bottles to 65 Cedar Street in Kings Park. That mailbox is the publisher. It is not a lab drop.
If PFAS is high, shop a unit tested for those chemicals. The marks are NSF 53 and P473. Reverse osmosis also covers them. If 1,4-dioxane is high, reverse osmosis — not a jug. Test first, then buy. The shopping lists live on PFAS filters and 1,4-dioxane reverse osmosis. Cartridges are a later bill on replacements. Do not copy Calverton site numbers — 14.9 parts per billion dioxane, 7,580 parts per trillion of one PFAS — onto an Oakdale tap. Those are a named plume. They are why a nearby well still gets a test. They are not this kitchen.
Ticks in the same grass are permethrin on clothes, on the ticks page. That is not a water hop. Grab bars in a high tub are the aging page if the ranch is staying. People born 1946 to 1964 are 61 to 79 in 2025. That care ring is Babylon, Huntington, and Islip. It is not this vote. If the decision is already to leave, you need a truck, not a second set of bottles and not a new lateral you have not been told to connect.

Common questions
Did Oakdale's sewer vote sewer Suffolk?
No. Oakdale passed about 88 percent in December 2025 when grants paid for construction. That is one hamlet. Suffolk is still about 26 percent sewered and about 74 percent unsewered, with on the order of 360,000 on-site systems.
Did Great River vote the same way?
No. Great River, also in the Town of Islip, voted no in 2019. Two hamlet votes, two years, two results. Do not splice them into one sewer story.
Does a sewer connection replace a well kit?
No. A sewer is wastewater leaving the lot. A well kit is drinking water at the kitchen tap. If this Oakdale kitchen still drinks a private well, mail a lab kit. A tank vote does not look for PFAS or 1,4-dioxane.
Is every Oakdale kitchen on a well?
No. Some lots already pay a water-district bill and still sit on a tank. Some run a well and a tank on the same sand. No water bill plus a cap in the grass usually means a well.
Does Suffolk's $100 well test look for PFAS?
No. Call 631-852-5810 if you want that cheaper county check. It looks at different things. A mail-in lab kit is the one that looks for PFAS and 1,4-dioxane. This site is not that office.
If the Oakdale well report is high, what do I buy?
Match the chemical. NSF 53 or P473, or reverse osmosis, for PFAS. Reverse osmosis for 1,4-dioxane. A fridge pitcher is not that filter. Test first, then buy.
Is this the Islip aging page?
No. The Town of Islip page is mixed wells on boom-care ranches. This URL is the named hamlet vote: Oakdale yes in 2025, Great River no in 2019, then the kitchen tap if it is a well.
Can I copy Calverton numbers onto this Oakdale tap?
No. Calverton site figures are a named plume. They are not a reading for every Islip hamlet. If you drink a well here, sample this kitchen.
