North Fork · Orient

Orient NY sits at the North Fork tip. The tap can still be a well.

Past Greenport and East Marion the land runs out. Wells here work like Southold and Greenport. Ticks sit in the same grass. A lab kit for the tap. Permethrin for clothes. Two hops. Do not splice them.

The North Fork actually ends here

Orient is the last hamlet on Long Island's North Fork. Main Road keeps going past Greenport village and East Marion until the land is a narrow strip between Long Island Sound and Orient Harbor, with Gardiners Bay beyond. That is the tip. Montauk is the South Fork point. This URL is the North Fork point. Greenport holds the Shelter Island ferry. Orient Point holds the Cross Sound run toward New London. Those are different boats and different streets.

The hamlet sits in the Town of Southold. The town page stays the town page. Mattituck keeps the 20-of-38 well sample. Greenport keeps the village-and-ferry note. This page is Orient: the tip lot, the kitchen that may still drink a well, and the grass that still holds ticks. A search for the end of the fork should not have to land on the village in the middle.

A weekend house at the point can sit dark from Monday to Thursday. The sand under it does not. A passenger walking from a parked car to the boat still walks grass. Neither fact turns Orient into Greenport. Neither fact turns a pant cuff into a lab kit. Do not paste a Nassau water-district cartoon onto this peninsula. Nassau kitchens are usually on a main. Suffolk's water plan still cites about 45,000 private wells countywide, on the order of 200,000 people. That is a plan figure, not a door-to-door count of Orient. Nassau has on the order of a few hundred private wells. The tip is Suffolk.

Riverhead is the fork, miles west, where the two forks split. Calverton's old Navy/Grumman site sits in that town. Those site figures stay on the Calverton page. They are not a reading for an Orient kettle. Do not copy 14.9 ppb dioxane or 7,580 ppt PFNA onto Village Lane, Narrow River Road, or a house by the harbor. Measure this tap if it is a well.

Wells like Southold and Greenport — this kitchen only

The well job on an Orient lot is the same class as Southold and Greenport: if the kitchen drinks a private well, measure it. The well on this lot is the only well a kit can name. Do not copy Mattituck's 20 of 38 private wells over New York's PFAS limit onto an Orient street. That fraction is a Mattituck kitchen fact. Eighteen of those wells were not over the limit, and none of them were this tap. The county-wide map lives on the Suffolk wells page. This URL is the tip.

Start outside. Look for a round well cap in the lawn, often close to the house, sometimes in a patch the mower skips. Then look in a basement, a crawl, or a small well house for a pump and a pressure tank. Then look at the bills. A regular Suffolk County Water Authority bill usually means this kitchen is on public water. No water-district bill, plus a pump, usually means a well. The lot next door is not this pipe. One harbor-side kitchen can still drink the sand. A neighbor toward a side street can pay a district.

If you just got the keys, ask for the last water bill and walk the grass that week. Closing papers can name a well and still skip the two chemicals this kit is for. If you rent, ask who pays the water and whether there is a cap. Silence is still a well until a lab. If you only open the house from Memorial Day to Labor Day, a closed winter does not put a treatment plant on the sand. A July kitchen is still a kitchen if anyone drinks.

Some lots keep a well for irrigation after the kitchen connects. If people still drink, cook, and make coffee from that well, fill the bottles. If the well only waters a lawn or a garden, and the kettle is on a district, skip the kit. Kids' glasses from the same tap are the reason to sample, not the sprinkler. If the kitchen is already on a district, skip this kit and use the PFAS and 1,4-dioxane tap guides.

New York limits two common PFAS — PFOA and PFOS — at 10 parts per trillion in drinking water. You will not taste that. You will not smell it. A clear glass on an Orient counter is not a PFAS test. From 2016 through 2022, Suffolk sampled private wells. About 47 percent of those sampled wells showed some PFAS. Two hundred two were over drinking-water standards. That is the wells they sampled, not an Orient census this page is going to invent. Your kitchen still needs its own bottles.

Suffolk still sells a $100 private-well test. Call 631-852-5810 if you want that product. It is a real lab. It is cheap. It looks at bacteria, nitrates, and the metals people have asked the county about for years. It does not look for PFAS. It does not look for 1,4-dioxane. This site is not that office. Keep their test if you want their check. Use a mail-in kit if you want the chemicals New York now limits at the tap. A twelve-dollar hardware-store strip is even narrower. It is built for chlorine, hardness, and a few metals you match to a color chart. It will not find PFAS. It will not find 1,4-dioxane. A water softener treats hardness. It does not close this gap.

When the kit arrives, use the cold kitchen tap you actually drink from. Do not wash the bottles with soap. Do not sample the hot side. Do not fill from a garden hose, a dock hose, or an outdoor shower. Pack the same day if you can. Do not leave a full bottle in a hot car while you wait for the boat. One kit covers the house. Two glasses on one tap do not need two boxes. If PFAS comes back high, shop NSF 53 or P473, or reverse osmosis. If 1,4-dioxane is high, reverse osmosis — not a pitcher. Test first, then buy. The filter pages are next. The measurement belongs here.

Ticks sit in the same grass

The second hop on an Orient lot is not water. Ticks sit in grass, leaf litter, and the seam where a mowed strip meets a field, a hedge, a marsh edge, or a wood line. The tip is a narrow peninsula. That means a lot of edge in a short walk: Sound-side brush, harbor reeds, a path toward the point, the strip between the driveway and the taller stuff. You do not need a preserve. Taking out the trash past the mowed middle is enough. A walk to the boat is still grass.

This is the same East End ecology Southold and Greenport already named. East Hampton, Montauk, and Shelter Island get the same grass. Do not hang a listed-site headline on a pant cuff. The island has 34 federal plus 449 state listed sites — 483 in all, not 500 Superfunds. Those listings sit on the same sand. They do not tell you whether a tick is on a sock.

Permethrin goes on clothes — pants, socks, the outside of shoes. Spray the fabric, let it dry, then dress. Do not put clothing permethrin on skin. Skin bug spray is a different product, for bare arms and neck. A yard fogger stays on that lot. It does not ride a pant cuff onto the ferry line, a trail verge, or someone else's hedge. Clothes first. Factory-treated fabric lasts through more laundry; until that is the button, the hop is the bottle you put on clothes you already own. Keep cats away from wet spray and drying fabric. Guests for a July week still walk the same seam.

Treated pants do not name PFOA. A certified lab does not cover a sock line. The longer clothes page is the East End ticks guide. The button here is that hop, separate from the kit.

See permethrin for clothes

Two hops. Do not splice.

A lab kit names the tap. Permethrin treats the clothes. They can sit on the same Orient lot in the same week. They are not one SKU. Do not buy a pitcher because the hamlet name was in a headline. Do not skip the kit because you sprayed pants. Do not skip the clothes because the well report was clean. Sorting is the job of this URL.

The default button on this page is the well kit, because the first question at the North Fork tip is still whether the glass is a well. If it is, measure. If the kitchen is already on a district, leave the kit and keep the clothes hop if you walk the hedge. Weekend guests in sneakers still walk someone else's seam.

About three-quarters of Suffolk homes are still on a septic tank or cesspool. The county still talks about 360,000 on-site systems. Nassau is about 85 percent sewered. Orient did not flip that county split. The well and the tank often sit on the same sand. Nobody is treating that drinking water on the way in. The sand under the island is a sole-source aquifer, designated in 1978. Nassau and Suffolk have no backup drinking water. The useful step at this house is still a kit if you have a well, and treated clothes if you walk the edge.

Do not hang a Superfund headline on either job. Do not hang a Calverton plume on the tip. Do not hang a Mattituck sample on this kitchen. Greenport and Southold are the sibling notes. This URL is Orient.

Common questions

Is Orient the same page as Greenport or Southold?

No. Southold is the town. Greenport is the village with the Shelter Island ferry. Orient is the last hamlet, at the tip, with the Cross Sound run at Orient Point. The well job is the same class. The URL is this lot.

Does every Orient house drink a private well?

No. Some kitchens pay a water-district bill. Some still drink a well. No district bill plus a cap or a pump usually means a well. The lot next door is not this pipe.

Should I put permethrin on the well or in a filter?

No. Permethrin is a clothes treatment for pants and socks. It is not a water chemical and it is not a filter. The well hop is a lab kit at the kitchen tap.

Does Suffolk's $100 well test look for PFAS here?

No. Call 631-852-5810 if you want that cheaper county check. It looks at bacteria, nitrates, and metals. It does not look for PFAS or 1,4-dioxane. Pipedeck is not that office. The button on this page is a lab kit you send from the tap.

We only open an Orient house in summer. Do we still test the well?

If anyone drinks the well when the house is open, treat it as a drinking well. A closed winter does not put a plant on the sand. Fill bottles at the cold kitchen tap on a day you are there.

Can I fill the bottles at a dock hose or outdoor shower?

No. Use the cold kitchen tap you actually drink from. A dock hose, a garden hose, and an outdoor shower are the wrong sample. Do not run the hot side.

Are Orient ticks a Superfund or tap problem?

No. Ticks sit in grass and at the marsh and field edge, the same East End ecology as Southold and Greenport. Listed industrial sites are a different list. A private well is a lab kit. The clothes hop is permethrin.

If the Orient well report comes back high, what do I buy?

Match the chemical. NSF 53 or P473, or reverse osmosis, for PFAS. Reverse osmosis for 1,4-dioxane. A fridge pitcher is not that filter. Test first, then buy. Permethrin still does not replace the kit.
