Where the census went

Brookhaven took +10,779 of Suffolk's +20,170 after 2020. That is volume: more kitchens, more cars, more wells that never got a main. Medford and Bellport-type blocks still mix public water with a cap in the grass. The town name on the envelope does not settle the pipe. A people count does not either.

+10,779 is Brookhaven's post-2020 population change in the census vintage used here. It is people, not houses. It is a town add, not a county add. It is a change, not a 2025 stock. This page does not invent Brookhaven's 2020 headcount or Brookhaven's 2025 headcount. Those stocks are not in the lock this site writes from. The lock published the add, and the Suffolk add it sat inside.

Suffolk's post-2020 add is +20,170. Brookhaven took +10,779 of that. 10,779 divided by 20,170 is about 53 percent. Call it more than half. Do not call it “Suffolk grew” and stop. Suffolk grew, and one town took the majority of the growth. Those are different sentences. Do not divide +20,170 by five and call it an annual Brookhaven forecast. There is no year-by-year Brookhaven series on this page. Keep the span labeled: post-2020. Keep the geography labeled: Suffolk. Keep the town labeled: Brookhaven.

Census Vintage 2025 puts Suffolk at 1,546,090 people and Nassau at 1,398,939. Suffolk is the larger county on that print. Suffolk is also the county whose post-2020 add was +20,170 against Nassau's +3,163. The east took the people. The west took a much smaller add. That is the county shape. Brookhaven is the town shape inside the east. The analog on the Nassau side is the Town of Hempstead: +2,418 of Nassau's +3,163, about 76 percent of a smaller county delta. Do not stack Brookhaven's +10,779 on Hempstead's +2,418 and call it “the island add.” Different counties. Different denominators. Two volume towns. One rule: the people did not sprinkle evenly across 124 school districts.

One island year in the same lock is a different clock. Births 29,969, deaths 23,483, domestic −10,894, international +17,536. Births minus deaths is still positive. Domestic migration is negative. International migration is the large in-print. Suffolk's 2024–25 year rhymes: births 15,623, deaths 12,911, international +4,332, domestic −4,406. That year is not Brookhaven's +10,779. Do not substitute a 2024–25 county component table for a post-2020 town add. A volume town can print a plus while the domestic line is red. That is arithmetic. It is not a mystery, and it is not a hydrant on every lawn.

Volume, not freeze

Freeze is the other half of the map. Oyster Bay, Glen Cove, and Long Beach sat below their 2020 base. Freeze is not “nobody lives there.” Freeze is a 2025 vintage count under the 2020 count. Listings in Oyster Bay can still run around $1.1 million while the headcount prints below 2020. Price and population are not the same meter. A freeze town can still have a dear house. A volume town can still have a house that ran with Suffolk's index.

Huntington often sells in a band near $970,000 to $1 million. Huntington is a price town on that snapshot. Brookhaven is a volume town on the vintage add. Those can both be Suffolk. They are not a contradiction. Hempstead-town sales in the second quarter of 2026 sat nearer $641,000 against a Nassau county print nearer $825,000. Mix inside a county is not this town's census share. Do not weld a sale price onto +10,779. Do not weld +10,779 onto a PFAS well. The integers tell you where people went. They do not tell you which Brookhaven kitchen still drinks a cap in the grass.

House prices on this island rose about four times since 1990. Pay rose about three. Suffolk's FHFA house-price index ran 75 to 316 from 1990 to 2025, about ×4.2. Suffolk pay on SAIPE ran $43,339 to $125,969, about ×2.9. Typical Suffolk town values in July 2026 sit near $719,931, up about 6.7 percent on the year. Suffolk's median sale sat about $695,000 in 2025 and about $703,000 in the second quarter of 2026. Brookhaven's +10,779 did not repeal the multiple. People arrived into a county whose house index already ran faster than pay. The add is demand. The multiple is the bill. Unpack the index on the housing guide. If the decision is already to leave the island, you need a truck, not a second set of bottles. This URL is not that moving page. Volume towns absorb people. The default Saturday here is still the pipe.

Mixed wells: the bill decides the kit

Brookhaven is mixed-well geography. Some kitchens pay a Suffolk County Water Authority bill. Some still drink a private well. South-central Suffolk still hides wells next to hydrants. District lines reached some streets years after the ranches went in. Some lots connected. Some lots did not. Both still say Brookhaven. Walk the grass for a round cap. Listen for a pump and a pressure tank. Then look at the mail. If a water-district bill never shows up, treat the kitchen as a well until a lab says otherwise.

This town page does not invent a Brookhaven well census. Suffolk's water plan still cites about 45,000 private wells, on the order of 200,000 people. That is a plan figure, not a door-to-door count of this town. Nassau has on the order of a few hundred private wells. This town is Suffolk. From 2016 through 2022, Suffolk sampled private wells. About 47 percent of those wells showed some PFAS. Two hundred two of them were over drinking-water standards. That is the wells they sampled. It is not a score for every house in the 45,000-well plan figure, and it is not a Brookhaven-only census we are going to invent. New York limits two common PFAS — PFOA and PFOS — at 10 parts per trillion. You will not taste that. A clear glass does not close the gap. If you drink the well, measure this kitchen.

Street forks live on other URLs in this town. Medford keeps the named mixed-street note: private wells, PFAS in the sampling, mains later on some blocks. Patchogue is the South Shore village in the same volume town. Coram is inland, on the volume corridor, still mixed. Same town. Different jobs. Do not paste Medford's sampling sheet onto a Patchogue village lot. Do not paste a Coram inland ranch onto this town meter and call the integers a hookup. A neighbor's hydrant is not your pipe.

How to fill the bottles is not this page. The kit procedure lives on the Suffolk wells guide. Order the kit from the button here if this kitchen is off the mains. Follow that page for the sample. Suffolk still sells a $100 private-well test. Call 631-852-5810 if you want that cheaper county check. It looks at bacteria, nitrates, and the metals people have asked the county about for years. It does not look for PFAS. It does not look for 1,4-dioxane. This site is not that office. A hardware-store strip will not find those two chemicals either. A water softener treats hardness. It does not close this gap.

Volume did not sewer the sand

Most of Suffolk is still unsewered. About 26 percent of Suffolk homes are on a sewer. About 74 percent are not. The county still talks about 360,000 on-site systems — septic tanks and cesspools — on the same sand that later shows up in the glass. Nassau is about 85 percent sewered. Brookhaven's people count did not flip that county split. Extra residents after 2020 did not lay a sewer under every ranch. A full school parking lot is not a treated tap.

Unsewered is not the same as a private well. Plenty of lots pay a water-district bill and still send bathroom water into a tank. Plenty of lots run a well and a tank on the same sand. Those are two setups. Nitrate in the Magothy aquifer rose more than 80 percent from 1987 to 2013. That is leftover plumbing on sand, not a PFAS meter, and not a substitute for the kit if the kitchen still drinks a well. The sand under the island is a sole-source aquifer, designated in 1978. Nassau and Suffolk have no backup drinking water.

Oakdale's sewer vote passed about 88 percent in December 2025 when grants paid for construction. Great River voted no in 2019. Those are Town of Islip hamlet votes. They do not sewer Brookhaven. They do not convert Suffolk. Until later connections actually land, the county is still about 74 percent unsewered. A yes vote in another town does not retire a cap in this one. The aquifer does not wait on another town's referendum calendar.

If the kitchen already pays a district

If a water-district bill shows up, skip this kit. Start with the tap guides for PFAS and 1,4-dioxane. Public water is treated. You may still want a filter that matches those chemicals. Look for NSF 53 or P473 on the box, or reverse osmosis under the sink. A fridge pitcher that only says it filters water is usually chlorine and taste. 1,4-dioxane needs reverse osmosis. A pitcher is a refund for that chemical. Do not paste Hempstead's 7-of-9 public-well dioxane record onto a Brookhaven kitchen. That is a Hempstead tap finding. Do not paste Calverton Navy/Grumman site numbers onto this town. Do not paste Bethpage TCE onto a Suffolk ranch. Those are other URLs.

If a well report comes back high, match the chemical to the tool. NSF 53 or P473, or reverse osmosis, for PFAS. Reverse osmosis for 1,4-dioxane. The kit does not replace the filter. The filter does not replace the kit. If you still drink the well, measure first, then buy. Cartridges after a matching unit live on the replacements page, not here.

Houses, cars, ticks — not the same Saturday

Volume is also cars. Suffolk recorded 118 traffic deaths in 2024 against Nassau's 67. Injury rates sit near 58 versus 38.4. About 2.3 to 2.6 cars per household is the stack. That is a roads story, not the aquifer, and not +10,779. The kit for that lives on the cars page. Auto insurance jumped about 80 percent in some ZIPs from 2019 to 2025. A monthly ticket on Long Island Rail Road zones 9–10 ran about $357 to $395 in January 2026. The train is a city ride. It does not tell you whether this kitchen is a well.

East End ticks are ecology: grass and edge habitat, not Superfund, not a census add. Permethrin on clothes is that SKU. It lives on the ticks guide. Do not hang a clothes treatment on this town button. A Brookhaven yard can have a tick and a well. They are still two hops. This hop is the well kit if there is no water bill.

Aging still happens in a volume town. Island 65-and-older counts ran 324,616 in 1990 to 597,366 in 2025. People born from 1946 through 1964 are 61 to 79 in 2025. That is this decade, not a 2031 start. Care work showed first in Hempstead and Levittown, then in Babylon, Huntington, and Islip. Brookhaven has the same high tubs. Volume and care-crunch order are not the same sentence. Volume is where totals moved. Care order is where the first ranch houses went up. Grab bars belong on the aging page if the house is staying and someone still uses the high tub. Do not hang grab bars on a well you have not sampled. Do not hang a well kit on a district tap.

Do not hang a Superfund headline on either job. The island has 34 federal plus 449 state listed sites — 483 in all, not 500 Superfunds. Those listings sit on the same sand. They do not tell you whether this Brookhaven kitchen is a well. The bill does. The cap does. Then the kit, or the filter class. United Way's ALICE count sat around a third of the island by 2023. Siena still finds most people calling life here good, and also that people in their 20s and 30s cannot stay. Both sentences can be true in the same kitchen. Those polls are housing and leave meters. They are not a well result, and they are not this town's vintage share.

About 167,350 Suffolk 18-to-34-year-olds lived with a parent in the Newsday ACS table — about 54 percent of the age group. A volume town can still keep adult children in the house. Headcount up and launch delayed are compatible. They are not the same meter. Do not splice the older Long Island householder-or-spouse series onto the later householder-only series. Those two live on the households page. None of those percents is +10,779.

Common questions

Is every Brookhaven house on a well?

No. Mixed streets. No water bill means treat it as a well.

Is this a moving page?

No. Volume towns absorb people. The moving guide is if you are leaving the island.

Did Brookhaven's growth put every kitchen on a main?

No. Volume is extra kitchens. It is not a hookup census. Medford-type streets still mix a well with a neighbor on the mains.

Is Brookhaven a freeze town?

No. Freeze is Oyster Bay, Glen Cove, and Long Beach sitting below their 2020 census counts. Brookhaven took +10,779 of Suffolk's +20,170 after 2020.

Is this the same page as Medford, Patchogue, or Coram?

No. This URL is the town volume meter. Medford keeps the named mixed-street note. Patchogue is the South Shore village. Coram is inland. Same town. Different jobs.

Does Suffolk's $100 well test look for PFAS?

No. Call 631-852-5810 if you want that cheaper county check. It looks at different things. A mail-in lab kit is the one that looks for PFAS and 1,4-dioxane. This site is not that office.

Did Oakdale's sewer vote sewer Brookhaven?

No. Oakdale passed about 88 percent in December 2025 inside the Town of Islip. Brookhaven is a different town. Suffolk is still about 74 percent unsewered.

Should I treat clothes for ticks from this Brookhaven page?

No. East End ticks live on the ticks guide. This button is a well kit if the kitchen is off the mains.
