Suffolk · Wading River
Wading River is North Shore Brookhaven. Mixed wells, not a tick kit.
Sound-side Brookhaven is a volume town. Mixed wells are possible on this hamlet. If there is no water bill, the first hop is a kitchen lab kit — not permethrin from an East End tick page.

North Shore Brookhaven is volume geography, not the East End first
Wading River sits on Brookhaven's North Shore, the Sound side of Suffolk's volume town. That is not a South Shore village. That is not Medford's south-central mix of ranches and later mains. That is not East Hampton after a wet spring. Brush grows here. The first hop on this URL is still the kitchen if the lot drinks a well. Pants and socks live on the ticks guide. Do not start this hamlet as a clothing SKU.
Search puts this hamlet next to the East End because the North Shore runs that far east on the map. The tax town is still Brookhaven. Calverton sits in the Town of Riverhead with a named plant file. Wading River does not. Same Sound in the windshield does not move the town line, and it does not turn a well kitchen into a tick SKU. Clothes treatment is a different URL, even when this lot has brush.
Brookhaven took +10,779 of Suffolk's +20,170 people after 2020. That is volume: more kitchens, more cars, more lots that never got a main, more lots that did. Freeze geography is Oyster Bay, Glen Cove, and Long Beach sitting below their 2020 counts. Wading River is not that set. A census bump is not a hydrant in every North Shore lawn. The town page for that people count is Brookhaven. This URL is the Sound-side hamlet inside it.
Suffolk's water plan still cites about 45,000 private wells, on the order of 200,000 people. That is a plan figure, not a door-to-door count of Wading River. Nassau has on the order of a few hundred private wells in the whole county. This hamlet is Suffolk. Mixed streets exist in Brookhaven. The house next door can pay a district while yours still draws from the yard. A neighbor's tap is not your pipe. A hydrant on the corner is not a kitchen result.
House prices on this island rose about four times since 1990. Pay rose about three. Suffolk's index is about ×4.2 against pay about ×2.9. That gap is why people stay in the ranch instead of buying the next one. The price story lives on the housing guide. Traffic deaths are a Suffolk roads story — 118 versus Nassau's 67 in 2024 — not the aquifer. The car kit lives on the cars page. This page assumes the Wading River house is staying long enough for a well kit or a filter class. If the decision is already to leave, you need a truck, not a second set of bottles.
Mixed wells possible: the bill and the cap, not the hamlet name
Wading River is mixed-well geography. Some kitchens already pay a Suffolk County Water Authority bill. Some still drink a private well. The hamlet name on the envelope does not settle it. Walk the grass for a round cap, often close to the house. Listen for a pump and a pressure tank in the basement or a small well house. Then look at the mail. If a water-district bill never shows up, treat the kitchen as a well until a lab says otherwise.
If you just got the keys, ask for the last water bill and walk the grass that week. Closing papers can name a well and still skip the two chemicals this kit is for. If you rent, ask who pays the water and whether there is a cap. Silence is still a well until a lab. If the well only waters the lawn and the kitchen already sits on a treated district line, skip the kit. If people still drink, cook, and make coffee from the well, fill the bottles. Coffee, cooking, and the glasses on the table are the sample. A sprinkler well is not that sample.
How to fill the bottles, why a hardware-store strip fails, and what Suffolk's $100 test actually checks live on the Suffolk wells page — order the kit from the button here if this Wading River kitchen is off the mains, then follow that guide for the sample. This URL is the hamlet fork: already on the main, or still a well, on Brookhaven's North Shore, not an East End tick page.
A people count is not a water main
Most of Suffolk is still unsewered. About 26 percent of Suffolk homes are on a sewer. About 74 percent are not. The county still talks about 360,000 on-site systems — septic tanks and cesspools — on the same sand that later shows up in the glass. Nassau is about 85 percent sewered. Brookhaven's post-2020 people count did not flip that county split. A new neighbor on a North Shore street is not a treatment plant.
Unsewered is not the same as a private well. Plenty of lots pay a water-district bill and still send bathroom water into a tank. Plenty of lots run a well and a tank on the same sand. Those are two setups. Nitrate in the Magothy aquifer rose more than 80 percent from 1987 to 2013. That is leftover plumbing on sand, not a PFAS meter. A nitrate strip can be a later job. It is not a substitute for the kit this page is about if the kitchen still drinks a well.
The sand under the island is a sole-source aquifer, designated in 1978. Nassau and Suffolk have no backup drinking water. From 2016 through 2022, Suffolk sampled private wells. About 47 percent of those wells showed some PFAS. Two hundred two of them were over drinking-water standards. That is the wells they sampled. It is not a score for every house in the 45,000-well plan figure, and it is not a Wading River-only census we are going to invent. New York limits two common PFAS — PFOA and PFOS — at 10 parts per trillion in drinking water. You will not taste that. You will not smell it. A clear glass does not mean the well is clear of it. If you drink the well, measure this kitchen.
Oakdale's sewer vote passed about 88 percent in December 2025 when grants paid for construction. Great River voted no in 2019. Those are Town of Islip hamlet votes. They do not sewer Wading River. They do not convert Brookhaven. Until later connections actually land, Suffolk is still about 74 percent unsewered. Patchogue and Medford keep their own South Shore and south-central notes in the same volume town. Do not borrow those streets as a Wading River result. Sound-side lots are this URL.
After the report, do not paste a pin or a tick SKU onto this tap
If a water-district bill shows up, skip this kit. Start with the tap guides for PFAS and 1,4-dioxane. Public water is treated. You may still want a filter that matches those chemicals. Look for NSF 53 or P473 on the box, or reverse osmosis under the sink. A fridge pitcher that only says it filters water is usually chlorine and taste. 1,4-dioxane needs reverse osmosis. A pitcher is a refund for that chemical.
If the well report comes back high for PFAS, shop a unit that was tested for those compounds. Reverse osmosis also covers them. Test first if you drink a well. Buying the box first is how a pitcher ends up in the fridge and the well stays the well. If 1,4-dioxane is high, skip the jug. The shopping page for that box is the dioxane reverse-osmosis guide. Cartridges are a yearly cost after you install something that actually matches the report. That later bill lives on the replacements page, not here.
Do not hang Calverton's site numbers on this North Shore kitchen. The Navy/Grumman pin is a named plant in the Town of Riverhead. Those dioxane and PFAS figures — 14.9 ppb versus a 1 ppb dioxane line, PFNA 7,580 ppt versus 10 ppt — are site figures. They are not a reading for a Wading River tap because the Sound is the same Sound. Keep the units. Do not flatten a pin into a hamlet. The Calverton and Riverhead pages exist so this kitchen does not have to wear them. Do not hang Mattituck's 20 of 38 onto this lot. That is a North Fork sample in Southold. Do not hang Bethpage's TCE plume here. Do not hang Hempstead public-well numbers here. The only bottles that name this tap are the bottles you fill here.
Do not hang a well kit on a district tap. Do not hang treated clothes on a well you have not sampled. East End ticks live in grass and brush. That hop is pants and socks on another URL. Wading River can have brush. The first hop on this page is still the kitchen if the lot drinks a well. The island has 34 federal plus 449 state listed sites — 483 in all, not 500 Superfunds. Those listings sit on the same sand. They do not tell you whether this Wading River kitchen is a well. The bill does. The cap does. Then the kit, or the filter class.

Common questions
Is every Wading River house on a private well?
No. Mixed wells are possible on Brookhaven's North Shore. Some kitchens pay a water-district bill. Some still drink a well. The bill and a cap in the grass settle this lot, not the hamlet name.
Is this an East End tick page?
No. East Hampton and the Forks keep the grass-and-brush hop. Wading River is volume-town North Shore Brookhaven. If the kitchen drinks a well, the first hop is a lab kit. Clothes are a different URL.
Is Wading River the same as Riverhead or Calverton?
No. This URL is North Shore Brookhaven. Calverton's Navy/Grumman numbers are a named pin in the Town of Riverhead. Do not paste site figures onto this kitchen.
Is Wading River the same as Patchogue or Medford?
No. Those are South Shore and south-central Brookhaven notes. Wading River is the Sound-side hamlet in the same volume town.
Do I still order a well kit if I already pay a Wading River water bill?
No. Skip the kit on a district bill. Match a PFAS filter or reverse osmosis to the tap.
Does Suffolk's $100 well test look for PFAS in Wading River?
No. That cheaper county check is a different panel. Fill steps, the hardware strip, and that product live on the Suffolk wells page. This URL is the Wading River kitchen, not that office.
What if a Wading River well report comes back high?
Match the chemical to the tool. NSF 53 or P473, or reverse osmosis, for PFAS. Reverse osmosis for 1,4-dioxane. A fridge pitcher is not that filter.
Did Brookhaven's post-2020 growth hook every North Shore lot to a main?
No. Brookhaven took +10,779 of Suffolk's +20,170 people after 2020. A people count is not a water main. Mixed streets still exist.
Census post-2020 Brookhaven volume; Suffolk well-plan figure and 2016–2022 sampling; Nassau ~85% sewered / Suffolk ~26% sewered; Calverton site figures as pin-only; county well-test line 631-852-5810; New York drinking-water standards; Suffolk 2024 traffic deaths.
